Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam on Wednesday described the economic comeback of Bangladesh over the past six months as a miracle.
He made this comment while speaking as chief guest at the "DJFB Talk" event, organized by the Development Journalists Forum of Bangladesh (DJFB), in the NEC conference room in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.
Shafiqul said that before the interim government took charge, the country’s economy had reached a point where it could have collapsed at any moment.
He also emphasized the need to restore discipline in the energy sector, stating that there has been state-sponsored looting in this sector.
"We are working on a permanent solution for the power sector. Discussions are underway with major power companies, and we aim to drill a significant number of wells to extract gas.”
He added that the efficiency of Chittagong Port will be improved. “Investment will not increase unless the port’s efficiency is enhanced. For re-export, Chittagong’s efficiency must be further improved. We are currently in discussions with major global companies regarding this. Our goal is to develop every port in Chittagong to attract direct foreign investment.”
The press secretary continued: “If the energy system is not efficient, no one will invest. The power system was looted in an organized manner. The country needs investment, but it was not facilitated. The revenue system was not properly managed.
"The previous government spent money recklessly despite having no funds. Five hundred sixty model mosques were built at excessive costs, which could have been done for much less. Railway lines were laid in such a way that trains do not even run throughout the day. This is nothing but a waste of public money.”
