CNG-run autorickshaw drivers staged blockades in Mirpur-1, Mirpur-14, and Rampura on Sunday morning, protesting fines and imprisonment for charging fares beyond the fixed meter rate.
The demonstration disrupted traffic in these areas, causing significant delays for commuters.
Protesters were seen stopping moving autorickshaws along with passengers, further worsening the situation.
This follows a similar demonstration on Thursday, when drivers blocked Mirpur Road in protest against the mandatory use of meters.
That protest, which began at 10:30am near Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, Ganabhaban, and College Gate, led to severe traffic congestion.
The blockade was lifted after about three hours at Asad Gate, allowing normal traffic flow to resume.
The protesters have been demanding the repeal of a law that imposes fines for not using meters.
The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) issued a directive on February 10, mandating that autorickshaws with route permits must transport passengers to any destination as per Section 35(3) of the Road Transport Act 2018. Drivers are prohibited from charging fares beyond the meter reading.
Violators face a maximum fine of Tk50,000, six months’ imprisonment, or both under Section 81 of the Act.
Additionally, one point may be deducted from the driver’s license for each violation.
