Police break up student protest over Narsingdi college closure

Police on Thursday afternoon dispersed Narsingdi Textile Engineering College students protesting against the institution's closure in front of the Secretariat.

At approximately 2:10pm, law enforcement officers forced the protesters to scatter from three directions.

Masud Alam, deputy commissioner (DC) of the Ramna Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said: "We repeatedly requested them to leave. However, they suddenly attacked us, prompting us to chase them away and disperse the gathering."

Earlier, on Tuesday, students of Narsingdi Textile Engineering College blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Narsingdi, protesting the decision to shut down their college and relocate them elsewhere.

They said their long-standing demand was to transfer the institution from the Weaving Board to the Directorate of Textiles, which had been ignored.
