The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday filed a case against Mohammad Matiur Rahman, a former member of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), and his son Ahmed Toufiqur Rahman for allegedly accumulating illegal wealth through corrupt practices.
The case filed under sections 27(11) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and section 109 of the Penal Code, accuses the family of concealing assets valued at over Tk53 crore.
According to the ACC report, Matiur Rahman, who is now retired, along with his wife Laila Kaniz and son Ahmed Toufiqur, is accused of acquiring wealth that is inconsistent with their known sources of income.
The commission investigations show that the family concealed assets, including properties in Dhaka's Bashundhara Residential Area, which amounted to over Tk42 crore.
Further investigations revealed that the family misrepresented financial documents and provided false information to authorities in an attempt to cover up their illicit wealth.
The ACC claims that the Rahman family used dubious methods to amass their fortune, with reports of fraudulent property deals and other unlawful practices.
The probe also uncovered discrepancies in the origin of their income, which does not match the luxury lifestyle and assets they have acquired over the years.
The total value of their hidden wealth exceeds Tk53 crore, and the ACC has recommended further legal action.
ACC spokesperson deputy director AKhtarul Islam said that “investigations are ongoing, and the commission continues to track down the illicit financial activities of the accused family members.”
Earlier, on December 15, the commission filed another case against Matiur and his family members on charges of amassed illegal wealth..
