DMP: 25 police officers hurt during protest demanding president’s resignation

During a protest in front of Bangabhaban demanding the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Tuesday, 25 police officers were injured in attacks by demonstrators, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

The statement was issued on Wednesday by DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muhammad Talebur Rahman.

He said among the injured, nine officers have been admitted to Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital, while the remaining 16 were sent home after primary treatment.

According to DMP sources, most of the police officers on duty in front of Bangabhaban on Tuesday night were subjected to physical assault and pelted with brick chips by the protestors.

From Tuesday afternoon, a protest under various banners demanding the president’s resignation had begun in front of Bangabhaban.

The protesters gave a 24-hour ultimatum for the president to resign.

Tensions escalated in the evening, and by 8:30pm, the protestors attempted to break through the barricades and enter the premises.

The police then used batons and sound grenades to disperse them, during which three people, including students, were injured.

Following this, the protesters retaliated, throwing stones at the police and even hitting officers with sticks after climbing onto police vehicles.

After the protest, the area around Bangabhaban remained tense on Wednesday morning.

Various units of law enforcement have been deployed to ensure control of any unwanted situations.
