Students who failed this year’s HSC and equivalent exams have left the Dhaka Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education premises after keeping its chairman there for eight hours, demanding an automatic pass.
The students ended their blockade and left the board premises after 9:30pm on Sunday.
Then, at around 9:45pm, the chairman and other officials safely exited the offices.
Asked about his resignation announcement in the face of the protests, Dhaka Education Board Chairman Prof Tapan Kumar Sarkar said it was not appropriate to resign like this from a government job.
“The ministry can withdraw our deputation. I told the students that I am resigning; now let us see if the ministry grants your demand for an automatic pass."
The protesters started their demonstration earlier in the day, and at about 1:30pm, they broke the main gate, entered the board premises and reportedly vandalized the chairman's office.
During this time, they kept the chairman confined, and other officials also became trapped.
