The city dwellers are facing severe hardship due to extensive traffic congestion and intense heat in Dhaka on Monday.
The situation has been exacerbated by students from the Polytechnic Institute blocking the Tejgaon Industrial Area and applicants staging a sit-in at Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in Gulshan, demanding the urgent return of their passports and Italian visas.
As a result, the entire city has come to a standstill. Even the footpaths were seen occupied by motorcycles and bicycles.
Tanvir Hasan, a businessman traveling from Tejgaon to Moghbazar, said: “The road towards Sat Rasta is blocked. I was taking a rickshaw to Mogbazar but had to start walking when I saw the road was closed.”
Another commuter, Mokhlesur Rahman, said: “Traffic jams are a constant issue, and with the sudden increase in heat, it has become even more unbearable. When will these protests end?”
Regarding the traffic situation, Gazi Shamimur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tejgaon police station, said: “Traffic has been halted on both sides of the road due to the blockade. We are working to restore normal traffic flow.”
