Nine more deaths reported in several police stations

At least nine people have been killed in arson attacks on police stations in Noakhali and Jatrabari.

Of them, four bodies were found outside Jatrabari police station on Tuesday morning. A group of miscreants set the police station on fire on Monday, and smoke was still rising from the building on Monday.. 

Among the dead bodies, three were policemen, and another is yet to be identified.

Meanwhile, looting continued at Badda police station in the capital after police abandoned the station on Monday night.

Witnesses reported that miscreants broke into the police station by breaking the main gate around midnight. They looted furniture, laptops, computers, and other important documents. Some people were seen staying inside the police station.

The attack took place following social media rumours that Indian intelligence agency members were carrying out a massacre in Badda and other parts of the capital.

Local residents said that Badda police station was operating out of a rented house. Protesters surrounded the police station throughout Monday. Between 2am and 3am, heavy gunfire was heard from the station.

Later, the police left the premises. After 3am, people entered the station and began looting. The police mess was set on fire, and looting resumed in the morning.

It was observed that around 12 noon, hundreds of people broke through the main gate of the police station and entered it. Various items were looted from inside, and someone was seen opening the grill of the mess in front of the police station.

In Noakhali, five people, including two policemen, were reported killed following attacks and arson at Sonaimuri and Chatkhil police stations in Noakhali on Monday.

The incidents occurred between 4:45pm and 6pm. Authorities have not yet revealed the identities of the deceased.

Noakhali Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Asaduzzaman and 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital supervisor Dr Mohammad Helal Uddin confirmed the information.

According to local sources, supporters of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement gathered at the Sonaimuri bypass area on Monday afternoon.

They were rejoicing when police allegedly fired from inside the police station, killing one person on the spot.

In retaliation, the protesters surrounded the police station, attacked and vandalized it, and subsequently set the building on fire.

Over 100 people were injured in the clash. Thirty-four of the injured were admitted to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital, including a policeman.

Dr Mohammad Helal Uddin said that 37 people with serious injuries were brought to the hospital in the evening. Three of them were dead on arrival. Currently, 34 people remain hospitalized, most of them from Sonaimuri.

SP Mohammad Asaduzzaman confirmed that the bodies of two policemen had been found so far. Of the 13 policemen present, four have been located. Two of the policemen were killed by having their throats slit. The building is still covered in smoke, and the full extent of the situation will be understood once the entire building is cleared.

SP Asaduzzaman added: "I have heard reports of three deaths, while some say two people died. Full information is yet to be confirmed."

In a separate incident at around 5pm, a group of protesters attacked Chatkhil police station from within a joyous procession.

They attacked and set fire to nearly every room inside the police station building, looting various firearms.
