At least 10 people were killed and many others injured in the capital’s Uttara on Monday afternoon after individuals in civilian clothes reportedly opened fire on protesters.
According to the Daily Star, the shots were fired from the Uttara East police station.
In response, hundreds of enraged people surrounded the police station and set it on fire.
The identities of those inside the station, who are still firing at the crowd and lobbing sound grenades, remained unknown as of 8:30pm.
The unrest began around 4:45pm when protesters threw bricks at an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) near the Uttara East police station.
The police responded by firing bullets, rubber bullets, and tear gas. The protesters then set the APC on fire.
At around 7:30pm,, an army team arrived at the scene but left shortly afterward, unable to convince those inside the police station to come out.
