King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan planted a Mesua ferrea (Ceylon ironwood) at the National Memorial on Tuesday.
Marking Independence Day, President Md Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid wreaths at Savar National Memorial in Dhaka. After that, the Bhutanese king planted the tree on the premises of the monument.
Jetsun Pema, the queen of Bhutan, was also present at the time.
On the brink of victory on December 6, 1971, Bhutan stood by Bangladesh through a cable message and gave recognition of independent Bangladesh.
The king of Bhutan arrived in Dhaka on Monday on a four-day visit.
In a press conference on Sunday, Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud said that the King of Bhutan will visit Padma Bridge during his visit to Bangladesh. He will visit the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, and the Bangladesh Special Economic Zone located at Araihazar, Narayanganj.
After leaving Dhaka by air to visit the Special Economic Zone at Kurigram, he will leave Bangladesh via Sonahat Land Port.
