Four of the quintuplets born at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Thursday have now died.
The condition of the only child alive is also critical, said Dr Sabiha Sultana, medical officer of DMCH’s neonatal unit.
She explained that all five babies were delivered normally. A newborn girl died sometime after birth and the remaining four were immediately admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for treatment. One baby passed away on the first night, followed by the loss of two more on Friday.
Dr Sabiha mentioned that the critical condition of the babies is due to their prematurity and low birth weight; they were born at just 26 weeks. The surviving girl child, who is currently under intensive treatment, weighs 900 grams.
Mansura Begum, 22, wife of CNG driver Md Mamun from Bandardia village in Narsingdi's Shibpur upazila, gave birth to the quintuplets at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at 10am on Thursday.
She was admitted on the day to the gynaecology department of DMCH at 8am with labour pains.
