Dhaka-17 by-polls: Hero Alom gets symbol, Tariqul gets back candidature

YouTuber Ashraful Hossen Alom, popularly known as Hero Alom, has been allocated the ektara symbol (one-string musical instrument) for the upcoming Dhaka-17 by-polls.

The symbol was allocated by Returning Officer Md Munir Hossain at Dhaka's Electoral Training Institute (ETI) building on Monday.

Later, Hero Alom said: "I asked for the ektara symbol, and they allocated that to me. I have no further complaints.”

He added that he wants a fair election to take place.

Awami League-backed candidate Professor Mohammad Ali Arafat was allotted the boat symbol. The Awami League central working committee member and media personality had never sought a party nomination from any constituency before, and his desire to contest the by-polls drew the attention of several quarters.

Jatiya Party's Sikdar Anisur Rahman has received the plough symbol, Bangladesh Congress' Md Rezaul Islam Swapan received the coconut symbol, and Zaker Party's Kazi Md Rashidul Hasan got the rose symbol.

Meanwhile, Jonotar Adhikar Party Chairman Tariqul Islam Bhuiyan got back his candidature for the by-polls on Monday.

The High Court suspended the decision of the Election Appellate Tribunal to invalidate his nomination papers. The court also ordered that he be allowed to participate in the election and that he be allotted a symbol.

The High Court bench of Justice SM Kuddus Zaman and Justice AKM Rabiul Hasan gave this order after hearing a writ in this regard. Advocate Azim Uddin Patwari appeared for the petitioner in court.

Azim Uddin said that on June 18, the Election Commission invalidated Tariqul Islam's nomination papers, falsely claiming that he had submitted papers with signatures from less than one percent of voters.

The parliamentary seat became vacant with the death of veteran actor Akbar Hossain Pathan, popularly known as Farooque. The by-election is scheduled to be held on July 17.
