Mother who lost her newborn at Central Hospital dies

Mahbuba Rahman Akhi, whose newborn died due to alleged wrong treatment at Dhaka's Central Hospital, passed away while undergoing treatment at the nearby Labaid hospital on Sunday.

Earlier, she was admitted to Central Hospital under the supervision of Professor Dr Sangjukta Saha on June 9.

Later, on June 14, her husband Yakub Ali complained of “wrong treatment” and “deception” by the authorities at Central Hospital. He claimed that their newborn child died due to the negligence of the hospital authorities.

After the incident, Akhi was admitted to Labaid Hospital where she died at 1:43pm, said Chowdhury Meher e Khuda, the hospital's communication manager.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Friday ordered a halt to all types of surgical operations at the Central Hospital.

It also directed that Professor Dr Sangjukta Saha be kept away from all medical activities over the death of the newborn and the wrong treatment given to the mother.

Two of the arrested doctors of Dhaka's Central Hospital, Dr Shahzadi and Dr Munna gave confessional statements before a Dhaka court. The court sent both of them to jail after recording their statement.

Prior to this, 11 hospital staffers including a doctor were suspended over the incident.

Yakub Ali Sumon filed a case at Dhanmondi police station last Wednesday.

Dr Shahzadi, Dr Munna, Dr Milli, assistants Zamir and Ehsan and hospital Manager Parvez were made accused in the case, along with some unidentified individuals.

According to the case documents, Akhi, who was expecting her first child, had been under the treatment of Professor Dr Sangjukta Saha at Central Hospital for the last three months.

Akhi was admitted to the hospital at 12:50pm on June 9 as she went into labour. Though Prof Saha was not present at the hospital at the time, the hospital authorities allegedly bluffed the patient's family, saying she is in the hospital and will operate on Akhi.

"As a result of the negligence of the hospital authorities and wrong treatment of the doctors present at the operation theatre, my child died and my wife is fighting for her life," Yakub said at the time.
