The government is planning to bring Tongi, Savar, and Keraniganj under the Dhaka City Corporation area to make the megacity modern and livable.
To this end, the Survey of Bangladesh has taken an initiative to conduct a large-scale topographic map of Dhaka and adjacent areas through aerial photography, Surveyor General of Bangladesh Brig Gen Md Habibul Haque said on Monday.
Speaking at a seminar at the Bangabandhu Military Museum in the capital, he said the project would help prepare the latest detailed Geographic Information System (GIS) database and map of Dhaka city, said a press release by ISPR.
“The government is working to make all arrangements to make Dhaka modern, eye-catching and livable, and ensure all civic amenities. The National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) will add a new dimension to this journey,” Brig Gen Habib said.
As per the Detailed Area Plan (DAP), the size of Dhaka and nearby areas is 1,528 sq-km. He said implementing the DAP would ensure the overall development of the capital city and adjoining areas, where population and industrialisation saw rapid growth in recent years.
Expressing concern over waterlogging, river pollution, unplanned urbanisation and loss of agricultural land, he stressed the need for a concerted effort by all departments concerned and the residents.
