‘Some lost hands, others had their legs blown off’

“The majority of the dead bodies were found in the basement of the six-story building. Four of the rescued had severe injuries. Their heads were hanging, some of them had their legs blown off, while others had lost their hands,” Fakhrul, a firefighter, was describing the rescue operation in Gulistan's Siddikbazar explosion in Dhaka.

“I sent two injured people to the hospital when I noticed that they were breathing,” he said.

The firefighter said most of the injured are in critical condition. The majority of the victims have bruises on their bodies and heads, he added.

“We recovered a total of six bodies and found five bodies inside the basement and another on the roadside. More than 50 injured people were rescued and sent to hospital by bus,” Anish, another Fire Service official said.

Tuesday's explosion at the six-storey building in Gulistan killed at least 17 and left dozens injured.
