Dhaka's New Market will remain closed until further notice as a fire burned through the adjoining New Supermarket early Saturday, just a few days ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The decision had been taken for safety reasons, New Market Business Owners Association President Aminul Islam said.
The nearby Chandni Chowk and Gausia markets have also remained closed since the morning.
The fire service reached New Supermarket at 5:40am and managed to bring the flames under control at 9:10am, but it had already damaged hundreds of shops by then.
