Awami League leader got death threats before murder, says family

Awami League leader Jahidul Islam Tipu, who was gunned down in Dhaka, received death threats over phone a few days ago, according to a case started by the family.

Unknown assailants opened fire at Jahidul's car on the street under the flyover at the capital’s Shahjahanpur, when by-stander 22-year-old Samia Afnan Prity was killed in the crossfire.

Prity, a student of Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College, was on her way to a friend’s home from Malibagh.

Jahidul's wife Farhana Islam, the councillor from women’s reserved seat from Motijheel, started a case on Friday over the killings against unidentified assailants, said OC Monir Hossain Molla of the Shahjahanpur Police Station.

According to the case details, Jahidul found himself in an internal party feud while serving as the general secretary for the Awami League’s Motijheel unit. He was threatened with life over the phone by unknown people some four to five days ago, it said.

Jahidul, who lived at the city’s Khilgaon, was a member of Motijheel Ideal School and College’s governing body. He also had a restaurant near the kitchen market in Motijheel, say the case documents.

His chauffeur, Monir Hossain Munna, told reporters at the hospital on Thursday that they were on their way home when some unidentified assailants opened fire on them, wounding both of them.

Police, however, said the attack was carried out by one gunman, who was masked and wearing a helmet,  and escaped on a motorcycle.

Investigators said they suspect it to be premeditated murder.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said on Friday that they were reviewing several motives behind the killing.

“We have uncovered several motives and clues, and we are working on them accordingly,” its Legal and Media Wing Director Khandaker Al Moin told a media call.

Investigators are now going through footage from security cameras to identify the shooter, he said before adding that several other law enforcement agencies are working on the case.
