Shomoyer Alo senior reporter killed in Dhaka road crash

Daily Shomoyer Alo Senior Reporter Habibur Rahman has been killed in a motorbike bike accident in Dhaka.

The accident was reported from the capital's Hatirjheel area at 2:30am on Wednesday.

Habibur Rahman was on his way to Madhubagh when his bike crashed into a traffic divider.

He fell face first on the road upon impact and sustained severe head injuries.

A pedestrian later rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) emergency, where the on-call doctor declared him dead at around 3:10 am, hospital police outpost In-Charge Bacchu Mia told Dhaka Tribune. 

Habibur, a former organizing secretary of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), was a Mass Communication and Journalism graduate from Dhaka University.

He worked at several media outlets before joining the daily Shomoyer Alo.

Following two namaz-e-janazas (funeral prayers) for the late journalist leader at the DRU premises and Dhaka University mosque, his body was taken to his Comilla home for burial.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed profound shock and sorrow at Habibur Rahman’s death.  

In a message of condolence, she prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed her deep sympathy to the bereaved family. 

Awami League (AL) General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader also expressed his condolences.  

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, in a condolence message, said, "I knew the young journalist Habibur Rahman. His sad demise is very pathetic.”
