RMG worker gang-raped in Dhaka, 2 arrested

A young woman, who works at a readymade garment factory, has reportedly been gang-raped by several men in the Muradpur area of Dhaka.

Police arrested two men accused, in a case filed over the rape, soon after the incident took place on the rooftop of a building in the area under Kadamtali police station on Tuesday evening.

Kadamtali police OC Jamal Uddin confirmed the development and added that three other accused were still on the run.

The 19-year-old rape survivor was also sent to the One-Stop Crisis Centre of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for medical tests and treatment in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Citing the case details, OC Jamal said one Akash, 20, had called the woman over the phone on Tuesday evening, met her and then took her to that Muradpur building’s roof -- where she was raped by several men.

He said they rescued the survivor after being notified by a call through emergency helpline 999. “Two accused were also held from the crime scene.”

The woman, who lives in Jatrabari and works at a local garment factory, filed the case accusing five people of raping her later at night.

“We are investigating. Efforts are underway to catch the three other accused,” said the OC.
