At least 23 people were injured when two factions clashed over taking control of a madrasa at Dhaka's Bhatara.
"The clash took place on Tuesday night between followers of two factions, Maulana Saad Kandhalvi group and Maulana Muhammad Zubair (Tabligh Jamaat) group, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Badda zone) Syed Mamun Mustafa confirmed on Wednesday.
The injured have been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
“The fractions were in conflict over taking control of the madrasa [called Madrasatul Mainul] for a long time and both groups controlled the madrassa at different times. On Friday, it went under the control of Zubair group,” said the ADC.
“Saad group came [to take control] on Monday night, and a clash erupted between them and Zubair group who were joined by locals," said ADC Mamun.
The clash lasted for about one hour starting from 9:30pm.
"Some 150 people from Saad group joined the clash where Zubair group had the similar numbers together with locals," he added.
At one point, 30 followers of Saad group got stranded inside the madrasa and were later rescued by police.
Later, three platoons of police were deployed in the area to avoid any further untoward incidents, said the ADC.
