Star Cineplex staying at Bashundhara City

Star Cineplex, the first ever international-standard multiplex chain in Bangladesh, will continue screening films at Bashundhara City shopping complex, as the mall authorities have backtracked from their decision to evict the multiplex from Level 8.

Star Cineplex Chairman Mahboob Rahman Ruhel confirmed the matter to the media on Wednesday night. “The Bashundhara City authorities have called us today and said to continue screening cinemas here,” he added.

Thanking the mall authorities, Ruhel also said that the extension of the contract was successful after Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, chairman of Bashundhara Group, expressed his interest in discussing the matter with the Star Cineplex authority.

Star Cineplex is scheduled to disclose the details regarding the future plan of continuing its regular operations at the Bashundhara City on Thursday.

Earlier on September 1, the Cineplex authority informed the media that the 16-year-old popular multiplex would stop its operation at the mall from October 1, after receiving an eviction notice from Bashundhara City authority – the birthplace from where it has been entertained cinema lovers of Dhaka since 2004.

The decision came out as a shock to the cinema enthusiasts and garnered negative reactions on social media, which might have prompted the reconsideration, according to the industry insiders.
