A suspected drug trader has been killed in a reported gunfight with the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in Dhaka.
The incident took place in the capital’s Khilgaon area on early Monday.
The deceased, Md Rajib, 34, was a drug trader accused in 25 arms and drug-related cases in various police stations.
DMP DB’s Additional Deputy Commissioner of Khilgaon zonal team Shahidur Rahman confirmed the matter, saying that acting on a tip-off, a DB team conducted a raid in Khilgaon’s west Nakhderpar area around 2:35am on Monday.
“When we reached the place, the drug traders opened fire on us, initiating a gunfight,” he said.
When the law enforcers retaliated, the criminals fled the spot, leaving a youth severely injured, he added.
The injured criminal was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the doctor declared him dead. His dead body was sent to a morgue for autopsy, said Shahidur Rahman.
The deceased was eventually identified as Md Rajib, a top drug dealer in Rampura and Khilgaon areas of Dhaka.
Three separate cases had been filed against him at Khilgaon police station.
Police recovered a foreign pistol, a magazine, two rounds of bullets and 500 pieces of yaba pills from the spot, said the official.
Assistant Sub-inspector of Police (ASI) Mohammad Shah Alam Mandal and ASI Mohammad Atiqur Rahman of Detective Khilgaon Zonal Team were also injured in the incident.
