Intelligence officers have nabbed a senior nurse from the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn & Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS) of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) while stealing expensive medicines from the government facility.
Acting on a tip-off, intelligence officials along with police arrested Tapan Kumar, staff nurse in-charge of the institute’s emergency ward, on Tuesday evening when he was leaving the hospital with stolen government medicines worth around Tk30,000.
Officials from the National Security Intelligence (NSI) and members from DMCH police camp jointly took part in the operation.
Sources said Tapan, who is also the founding leader of Swadhinata Nurses Parishad, had been involved in stealing medicines, including high-power antibiotics, throughout his long career at the hospital.
Confirming the incident, DMCH police camp Inspector Bachchu Mia said the hospital has been informed about Tapan’s arrest and he has been handed over to Shahbagh police.
Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Dr Partha Shankar Pal, resident physician of the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of DMCH, said any decision regarding Tapan, including departmental action, will be taken by DMCH authorities following the investigation.
