A suspected criminal and an alleged narcotics dealer have been killed in separate “gunfights” with the members of the law enforcement agencies in Dhaka.
The deceased were identified as Billal Hossain alias Chapati Billal, 29, and Md Jalil, 45.
Billal was killed in a “gunfight” hours after he was arrested by the police in Khilgaon Shakher Jayga area on Thursday night while Jalil died in a “gunfight” with RAB in the Korail TNT field of Banani in Dhaka, early Friday.
The dead bodies are in Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for autopsy.
Khilgaon police station Officer In-Charge (OC) Mashiur Rahman told Dhaka Tribune that police arrested Billal from Khilgaon’s Goran on Thursday afternoon.
Billal was accused in 16 cases including robbery, dacoity, drug peddling, and attempted murder.
Later, based on Billal’s information, police conducted an operation in Khilgaon’s Shekher Jayga to arrest Billal’s other associates around 11:30pm on Thursday night, he added.
Police took Billal with them to identify his associates. Sensing the presence of the police, the terrorists opened fire forcing the police to fire back, the police official said.
At one stage, the terrorists were forced to retreat and fled the scene. Later, police found that Billal was hit by a terrorist’s bullet, he added.
OC Mashiur also said they sent injured Billal to DMCH and the duty doctor declared him dead.
Billal used to rob people threatening them with a machete or chapati. That is why he was called Chapati Billal, he added.
Police recovered a pistol and a magazine from the scene.
Meanwhile, RAB 1 Operations Officer ASP Md Kamruzzaman said that acting on a tipoff about some drug dealers gathering at the Korail TNT field in Dhaka’s Banani area, a RAB team conducted a drive.
“Sensing the presence of RAB, the drug dealers opened fire on them. In retaliation, RAB also fired back. At one stage the crooks fled the scene leaving injured Jalil behind. A RAB personnel was also injured,” he added.
RAB rushed the injured to DMCH where the duty doctor declared him dead. Two foreign pistols, two magazines, 11 bullets, and 500 yaba pills were seized from the scene, he further added.
Jalil was a notorious drug dealer in the Korail slum and Bowbazar area. There are around 16 narcotics cases filed against him in various police stations, the RAB official said.
DMCH sources said nobody, including family members, has claimed either of the deceased yet.
