RMG workers demonstrate at 4 places in Dhaka demanding wages

Workers from at least four readymade garment (RMG) factories took the streets in four different areas of Dhaka, demanding payment of their dues.

Since Wednesday morning, RMG workers were seen gathering and demonstrating at Mirpur 11, Kallayanpur, Mohakhali, and Badda.

The government earlier directed the RMG factory owners to pay wages by April 16 amid coronavirus pandemic after BGMEA announced shutdown of all factories till April 25.

Bangladesh National Garments Workers Employees League (BNGWEL) President Sirajul Islam Rony confirmed the Dhaka Tribune that around a thousand workers of Clamond Garments started protesting at Mirpur 11 at 10am to press home their demand.

Mirpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostajirur Rahman said, the workers of Needs Fashions Ltd and Amichi Apparels Ltd took to the streets at Kallyanpur area around 9am.

Badda police station OC Md Parvez Islam said workers of Sahara Fashion Ltd demonstrated at Pragati Sarani from 9am to 10am.

“About 200 to 250 workers were on the street. Then the local public representative, army officials, along with us, managed to persuade them to end their demonstration,” he said.

At the same time, workers of MA Garments Ltd demonstrated at Mohakhali area from 9am to 9:15am, confirmed Tejgaon Industrial police station OC Ali Hossain Khan.

“They came to withdraw salary, but took the streets as they failed to collect it. Later, they withdrew their demonstration after the factory owner assured them of their payment by tomorrow (Thursday),” he added.
