Fire at Rampura grid substation causes blackout in Dhaka

A fire at a grid substation at Ulon in Rampura Mohanagar Project area led to a power cut in vast areas in the southern part of the city.

The fire broke out at the 132/33 kV grid substation of Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) at 3:55pm, but the reason is still unclear.

Fire Service and Civil Defence Central Control Room Duty Officer Rasel Shikdar said: “On receiving the news, a firefighting unit rushed to the spot and doused the fire at 4:20pm.”

An official of Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) said that electricity supply in the city's Motijheel, Rampura, Jatrabari, Lalbagh and Dhanmondi had been severely disrupted by the fire.

The PGCB was trying to restore electricity supply to these areas through alternative means, the official said.

He said the substation was recently handed over to DPDC, but both PGCB and DPDC officials were jointly working in the operation.
