Eight years after the gruesome murder of journalist couple Sagar-Runi, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has submitted its progress report to the High Court saying that two unidentified men were involved in the killing.
However, the sources at the elite forces could not confirm the identities of the two men, saying that the evidence was found through DNA sampling in the US.
The RAB submitted its progress report to the Attorney General on Monday.
“We have submitted the progress report following the court order,” RAB Legal and Media Wing Sarwar Bin Kashem told Dhaka Tribune.
“The High Court bench is likely to hold a hearing on the matter on March 4. If the RAB submits the progress report, we will place it before the court,” Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukder said.
Earlier on November 14, 2019, the High Court made an observation that the achievements and reputation of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) would suffer if it fails to complete the investigation of the murder of journalist couple Sagor-Runi.
The High Court bench of Justices M Enayetur Rahim and Md Mostafizur Rahman made the observation in delivering its verdict on a petition filed by Tanvir Rahman, an accused in the case who is now on bail.
On February 12, 2012, Maasranga Television News Editor Sagar Sarowar, and his wife, ATN Bangla Senior Reporter Meherun Runi, were stabbed to death in the bedroom of their apartment in Dhaka’s West Razabazar area.
After giving exemption to Tanvir from appearing before the court in person, the HC bench asked the investigation officer of the case to submit the investigation report in an affidavit by March 4 on the part of Tanvir, on whether he was involved in the murder or not.
RAB, the agency in charge of the investigation, has not been able to confirm any substantial progress in its probe into the murders. The submission of the probe report in court has been deferred 71 times.
Mahir Sarwar Megh, the only son of the couple, was only five years old then and was in his room when his parents were killed in theirs.
The double murder sparked a nationwide outcry, particularly among journalists, who have been demanding justice for the slain couple since then.
