NID DG: Preparations completed for DNCC and DSCC polls

The Election Commission (EC) has taken full preparations to hold a free, fair, and credible election, Brigadier General Saidul Islam, director general of the National Identity Registration Division (NID) wing of the EC has said.

He was speaking at a press conference at the EC office on Friday.

Saidul Islam said 35,000 Electric Voting Machines (EVM) were used in mock voting while 45,770 polling agents have been trained to conduct fair elections.

He said two members would be deployed for technical support at each voting center out of a total of 5,015 Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force personnel.

However, they will not engage in any kind of action to maintain law and order. They will go straight to the polling stations from the army camp and go back to their camp after the voting period is over, he added.

Brig Gen Saidul said neither the presiding officer nor the assistant presiding officer can vote. But presiding officers can assist 1% of voters to cast their votes. However presiding officers will have to take permission from the EC to assist more people afterwards.

If anyone tries to cast his or her vote by using any illegal method, he or she will face maximum punishment under existing laws.

The NID director general said the results of the election would be released in the presence of polling agents. A printed copy of the results would be given to each candidate's agent. Results will be announced from each center.

He said the EC expected the results to be released from the center by 4:30pm, adding that the results from the center would be sent to the Returning Officer.

He also said that a voter could cast his or her vote between 40 seconds and a maximum of one minute.

He hoped that voter numbers would see an increase at the polling centers from those at previous elections.

Any voter can learn about his or her voting center by sending a text message to 105, using his or her NID number till 11pm on Friday, Brig Gen Saidul Islam said.
