'Sir Abed thought about welfare of people, till last moment'

Brac Founder and Chair Emeritus Sir Fazle Hasan Abed always thought about moving forward the dream of the marginalized people, Brac Executive Director Asif Saleh has said.

"Till the last moment, he (Fazle Hasan Abed) always thought about people and their welfare," Saleh, also a family member of Sir Abed, said on Friday.

He was talking to journalists who gathered on the premises of Apollo Hospitals Dhaka in the capital to attend a briefing for the details of the demise of the Brac founder.

Fazle Hasan Abed breathed his last on Friday night while undergoing treatment at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

"Even when he was in the ICU with an oxygen mask on, he called his daughter and asked her to develop the Brac's new schools following the models used in Turkey as those are good ones," he reminisced.

"During the time of cyclone Bulbul, he could not sleep at night and asked me to do everything possible to help people affected," Saleh recalled.

"Till his last moment, he spoke about people," he added.

"We will work on to take the dream forward."

At the press briefing, Saleh said the recently formed Brac Global Board will carry forward the non-governmental organization (NGO)'s activities in the days ahead.

He said: "For the last four-five months, he (Fazle Hasan Abed) kept himself busy with the global governance of Brac. The Global Board, formed initially with three members, will move forward the activities of Brac.”

"We have a strategy for the next 10 years which will be followed in the coming days to implement the NGO's activities," Saleh told journalists.

Earlier on December 8, 2019, Brac announced that it is scaling up its global ambition to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It aims to reach at least 250 million disadvantaged women (and their dependents), youth, and people living in poverty around the world, including Bangladesh, within the next 10 years.

The principal role of the Brac Global Board will be to ensure that Brac has the right strategy, resources and governance to support its vision.
