Uber sets up free eye check-up camp for driver

Uber, the world’s largest ride-sharing company, has set up a free week-long eye check-up camp for nearly 1,000 drivers in Dhaka.

This initiative is a part of Uber’s recently launched Road Safety campaign in Bangladesh, reiterating the company’s #SafetyAtHeart commitment.

The eye check-up camp has been organized at the Green Light Center of Uber in Uttara, in collaboration with Vision Aid Foundation, an NGO that works for social well-being.

“Good vision is a must for safe driving, and with this initiative we wish to make eye care facilities more accessible to driver partners on our platform.” Zulquar Quazi Islam, lead Uber Bangladesh, said.

“Safety is a top priority at Uber, and we are determined to provide better on-road safety solutions to driver partners on our platform,” he added.

Chairman of Vision Aid Foundation, Taufique Mohiuddin said: “Good eyesight is fundamental for safe driving, and the lack of it can have severe consequences. It is an important issue, and we are glad to be collaborating with Uber on this.”

Promoting on-road safety is a top priority in Uber’s month-long Road Safety campaign. The campaign is designed to raise public awareness around the need for road safety.

According to a study of Brac, around 50% of transport workers in Bangladesh suffer from eyesight problems.

At least 1,552 people, including 195 women and 268 children, were killed in road accidents across Bangladesh, between January and April of 2019.
