Teen charged under Animal Cruelty Act for skinning kitten alive

Police on Monday pressed charges against a teenage girl in a case filed for killing a kitten and uploading a video on Facebook of the killing on March 19.

Sub-inspector Nayan Devnath of Mugda police station, investigation officer for the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Court of Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) in Dhaka.

Confirming the charge sheet, Sub-inspector Md Ashraful Alam, general recording officer (GRO) of CMM court told Dhaka Tribune, that the charge sheet was submitted against the accused under the Cruelty to Animals Act-1920 to be produced before the court on July 9 for the next course of action.

“The names of 15 people were mentioned in the charge sheet as prosecution witnesses, including the complainant, in the case,” he added.

A   Mugda police station team in the capital arrested the teenage girl for killing a cat on March 22.

The case documents say that the girl killed a kitten on March 17 and uploaded video footage of the killing on Facebook on March 19. The video spread like wildfire through social media overnight.

The video was watched by Zahid Hossain, general secretary of Care for Paws, an animal welfare organization.

A team went to the girl’s house when the organization found out her identity and address.

 Zahid Hossain then filed a case against the student under the Cruelty to Animals Act with Mugda police station.
