Police will again launch a fortnight long traffic awareness program after Durga Puja involving senior students and volunteers to continue changes in the traffic system.
DMP Commissioner Asaduzzman Mia said: “Some changes in the city’s traffic system have come following the recent student movement for road safety but those are not visible yet.
“The situation cannot be changed overnight; continued progress is needed. The fresh program will bring visible changes,” he hoped.
The DMP Commissioner was speaking at the capital’s Krishibid auditorium on Saturday.
He said authorities of several schools in the city have agreed to volunteer in the traffic management process.
University teachers, top police officials, celebrities from film industries, cricketers of Bangladesh Cricket Team and hundreds of students took part in the rally.
The students who were on the roads during the safe roads movement in early August will volunteer in the program.
The DMP chief said the culture of disobeying traffic rules, a growing number of vehicles, and improper road engineering and planning were the main reasons for a poor traffic system, but police were trying hard to solve the crisis as there is scope for improvement.
“The current traffic problems might be solved if road designing is improved,” he said.
Renowned architect Mobasher Hossain said students during their movement of safe roads have showed a ray of hope about the prosperous future of the country, which the civil society could not express in several years.
“The courage and honesty of the students has set an example for adults,” he said. “They have showed how everybody should be treated by the law.”
Prof Dr M Tamim of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) said: “The tendency of breaking laws possibly starts with the violation of traffic rules as it has been continuing over the years with impunity.
“Laws should be applied strictly and equally for all. Then people will gradually obey laws,” he said.
Cricketer Taskin Ahmed said: “We have to change ourselves first and then encourage others.”
