Bangladesh Railway is set to add 40 locomotives to its fleet to improve the provision of its services, Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan said on Monday.
Apart from the locomotives, 250 more carriages will also be bought, the minister said after attending the signing of an agreement with an American company for the locomotives at Railway Bhaban.
Asian Development Bank and Bangladesh Railway are jointly financing the $135,340,344.41 project. The first locomotives are scheduled to be delivered within the next two years, and all of them are set to reach Bangladesh by 2022.
Minister Sujan also promised to make Bangladesh Railway free from corruption, as well as to install rail lines in every district, renovate and modernize existing lines, and ensure proper sanitation and hygiene among other development initiatives.
He expressed hope that such initiatives would make the railway sector profitable.
