At least 48 women and children faced various forms of torture in the month of December last year in Khulna.
Though the month saw less crimes compared to November, the law and order situation did not improved significantly. The information was revealed at a meeting of the law and order committee at the deputy commissioner’s office yesterday.
The committee said the nine police stations of the district during December saw a total of 160 cases including one case of robbery, two cases of mugging, three for stealing, four murder cases, five cases under arms act, five cases of rape, 23 cases of violence against women and children, human trafficking nine, 23 under drugs act and 85 cases in other acts. In November, the number was 165.
In the eight police stations of the Khulna city there were one case of robbery, seven cases for stealing, two for murdering, one case under arms act, three under speedy tribunal, two for abduction, nine cases of violence against women and children, human trafficking one, 52 under drugs act and 39 others. The total number of cases in December was 116 compared to 149 in November.
State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Narayan Chandra Chanda was present at the meeting as the chief guest while Deputy Commissioner Md Mostafa Kamal presided over it.
Two police men were awarded in the meeting for their bravery. SI of Digholia police station Asaduzzaman and Constable Bipin Chand Odhikari were badly injured during a drive to arrest a drug lord. They each were given a cheque of Tk10,000.
The meeting also took a number of decisions to ensure a better law and order situation in the district in the coming days.
