Police officer accused of child marriage

A case was filed against a sub-inspector of Tangail police station accusing him of child marriage and torturing his second wife in Barisal.

The case was filed with the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, Barisal, by Mahmuda Begum, mother of teenager Marufa Begum, the alleged victim and second wife of the sub-inspector, Abdul Wares.

Wares’ first wife Asma Begum and sister Lovely Begum were also accused in the case.

In the case, it was alleged that Wares, when stationed at at Barisal Port police station, forcibly married Marufa, 13, of Khontakhali village, in 2012.

He was then transferred to the Kotwali police station in 2013 and to Tangail police station this year.

Marufa became pregnant in the meantime and Wares, along with his family members, put pressure on Marufa to terminate the pregnancy.

The victim’s mother also alleged that Wares, with the help of the other accused, tortured Marufa in his residence in Barisal’s Mallik Bari Road, causing a miscarriage on May 20 this year.

Then he left Marufa at her parents’ home and left for Tangail.

On June 11, Wares went back to his in-laws’ and demanded Tk2 lakh as dowry, severely injured Marufa with sharp weapon, and left again.

Marufa was admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, said Marufa’s mother.

The tribunal’s judge asked the OC of Barisal Port police station to submit the investigation report of the case as early as possible.
