The Armed Police Battalion (APBn) at the Hajarat Shahjalal International Airport seized 15 gold bars weighting around 2 kg by arresting nine expatriate on early hours of Saturday.
The arrestees landed at Hajarat Shahjalal International Airport from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.
The detained persons have been identified as Ataur Rahman, Atowar Hossain, Zakir Hossain, Ali Hossain, Rafiqul Shah, Kamrul Islam, Md Baha Uddin, Delwar Hossain and Md Liton.
All the nine Saudi expatriates have arrived in Dhaka on two separate flights from 12:00am to 2:00am in the early hours of Saturday.
Seven of them arrived on a flight of the SV Airlines and two on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, said Alamgir Hossain Shimul, an additional superintendent of the APBn at the airport.
He said all the persons were arrested at the outer premises of the airport while they had been departing the airport with the gold bars without paying the taxes and duties against the gold.
The Addl SP said the detained persons had smuggled the gold worth around Tk 90 lakh as part of their illegal tendency of gold trading.
Earlier on Friday morning, the Customs Department officials seized gold weighting to 3kg and the APBn personnel seized 1100 grams of gold on Thursday night.
Smuggling of gold has intensified centring the airports in Bangladesh since the Indian government imposed some bars on the import of gold last year.
Sources said around 60 rings used to smuggle in and out of gold, diamond, various precious metals and stones, currencies and other items through the airport.
There had been the record of the seizures of 124 kg and 109 kg of gold in two separate hauls at the Dhaka airport.
