A son-in-law has allegedly burnt four people including mother-in-law to death by setting fire to the house of his father-in-law in Dumdia village of Gopalganj sadar upazila on Saturday night.
Gopalganj sadar police station ASP Monirul Islam has confirmed the deaths to the Dhaka Tribune.
The deceased were identified as Furia Begam, 65, her grandchildren Tamim, 8, Aminur Sardar, 13 and Tonima, 5.
Paikkandi Union Parishad Chairman Monir Gazi told the Dhaka Tribune that the son-in-law Azad Molla poured petrol and set fire to his father-in-law’s house where his mother-in-law was sleeping along with her three grand children at 11pm on Saturday.
Later, locals rushed to the spot and found Furia, Aminur and Tamim dead.
They rescued Tonima and Roni in a critical condition and sent them to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital where duty doctors declared Tonima dead.
Azad's wife, also daughter of deceased Furia said: “Azad threatened my mother over a telephone saying that he wants to burn us all.”
Azad and my family had a family brawl for a long time, she added.
Police officials visited the spot and started a drive to arrest Azad, the ASP said.
