JL activists murder accused held after 'gunfight'

Benapole port police have arrested a “notorious terrorist” and also the accused in two Jubo League activists murder cases after a “gun-battle” between the law enforcers and his accomplices.

The arrestee is Rafiqul Islam.

Apurba Hasan, officer-in-charge of Benapole port police station, told the Dhaka Tribune: “The gunfight took place on Friday night while the law enforcers were conducting a drive in Shikri-Shibpur area.

Sensing the presence of the police, the terrorists opened fire that triggered the gunfight, leaving Rafiq injured,” he added.

The OC further said the police recovered a one-shooter gun, one round of bullet and two crude bombs from the spot.

Sub-Inspector Ashraful and Constable Tazul Islam also received injuries in the gunfight.

On April 26, two Jubo League activists- Iman Ali, 35, and Lalon Mia, 26, were killed in a clash between two groups of Jubo League over sharing of money earned from “smuggling” at the country’s largest land port.
