Teenage girl tortured in Natore

The leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League have reportedly beat a 17-year-old girl up and  evicted the family members from their house for alleged unsocial activities with a youth at Motsopara village under Singra upazila.

The victim was identified as Sweety Khatun, daughter of Altab Ali, of Mostopara village under Singra upazila of the district.

Locals said that a group of people led by Kalam union parishad chairman Fazlar Rahman Fanu  and local AL activists Shamim and Alam entered inside the house of Altab Ali, beat up his daughter Sweety, vandalised their house, their shop and evicted the family members around 9pm on Friday.

The six-member family was moving here and there after the eviction, said witnesses.

While talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Sweety said: “They have brought false allegations against me and beat me up in order to take revenge on my father.”

She added: “My father is a local BNP supporter and worked for the party during the upazila election. Following the matter, the local AL members led by Fanu, Shamim and Alam attacked our house in absence of my father and tortured us.”

When contacted, Shamim and Alam denied the allegations against them and told the Dhaka Tribune that locals beat up Sweety and evicted the family for her “unsocial activities” with a local youth Suzon.

On the other hand, advocated Abul Kalam Azad, BNP-backed chairman candidate said: “Sweety is innocent. Her fault is that she is the daughter of a BNP supporter.”

He urged the local authority to arrest the attackers and rehabilitate the family.

Regarding the attack, Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Singra police station said: “The allegation against the girl may be true but none can torture her. They have no rights to evict a family from their house.

No written complaint has been lodged with the police station yet. If it is filed, police will take necessary step,” he added.
