Taltoli upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) in Barguna district allegedly released a stalker yesterday after getting orders from a local Awami League leader.
According to sources, police arrested Kawser, son of Kalam of Taltoli Para village, red-handed while he was harassing a girl.
Later, he was produced before a mobile court led by the UNO Tofayel Ahmed.
Sources said Tofayel had released Kawser under the local AL president's orders.
Students, teachers and parents in the area expressed dissatisfaction at such illegal activity of the UNO.
Taltoli Degree Collage Principal Harun-ur-Rashid said; “The crime will increase if the criminals are released illegally and parents will become concerned for sending their children to educational institutions.”
Taltoli Begum Nurjahan Girls’ School Head Master Anisur Rahman Shanu said : “The criminals will be inspired if they are released without trial.”
“Female students will lose interest towards study due to lack of security,” he said.
Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Taltoli police station said; “Kawser is a notorious criminal and there are several cases against him with the police station.”
When contacted, the UNO denied the allegation.
The victim’s father said Kawser used to tease his daughter often while she was going to school.
He also gave her death threats several times when she protested.
