Four arrested over gold thefts at three temples in Dhaka, Narayanganj

A single gang was behind a series of gold jewellery thefts at three temples in Dhaka and Narayanganj, with police arresting four people, including a married couple, in connection with the incidents, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said.

The information was disclosed at a briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Tuesday.

DMP Joint Commissioner Faruk Hossain said no incidents of violence have been reported during the Durga Puja celebrations and that comprehensive security measures had been taken to ensure the festivities proceeded smoothly.

Regarding the thefts, he said six annas of gold were stolen from Ramna Kali Temple on the afternoon of October 7. Following a complaint filed with Shahbagh Police Station, police launched an investigation and arrested Lipi Karmakar and Arnab Roy, a couple, from Uttarkhan.

Acting on information provided by them, police arrested another person, a jewellery shop owner, and recovered two annas of gold.
During interrogation, the suspects disclosed their involvement in recent gold thefts at Siddheshwari Kali Temple in Dhaka and Baba Loknath Temple in Narayanganj, Faruk said.

The four arrestees have admitted their involvement in the thefts, he added.
