Customs intelligence officials have recovered eight polythene-wrapped, egg-shaped packets containing 4.204kg of gold-like paste from the tank of a high commode at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The recovered paste is initially estimated to be worth around Tk7.5 crore, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) said.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate’s airport A-shift conducted a raid at around 6pm on Saturday.
The packets were found inside the tank of a high commode in a washroom near Belt No 1 of the Customs Hall. The packets were unclaimed.
In the presence of representatives from various intelligence and relevant agencies, customs officials recovered the packets and opened them at the Customs Hall inventory table. They initially found 4.204kg of gold-like paste.
A registered goldsmith is now separating the gold from the paste to determine its exact weight and purity.
The final quantity, purity and actual market value will be confirmed after the testing process is completed.
