The body of a 47-year-old man, who went missing three days ago, was recovered from beneath a house in Lalbagh, Dhaka, on Friday.
Police also detained Roni’s friend Masum, 46, in connection with the incident.
Police said Masum killed Roni after Roni demanded repayment of Tk3 lakh owed to him. Masum was initially detained and questioned as a suspect after Roni went missing and later admitted to killing and burying him, police said.
Following information provided by Masum, police recovered Roni’s partially decomposed body from an open space on the ground floor of a 5-storey building at Holding No 9 on BC Das Street under Ward 26.
His hands and legs were tied, while his face was wrapped in polythene, police said.
Inspector (Investigation) Md Saiduzzaman of Lalbagh Police Station said Roni had been missing for three days and his brother, Sheikh Abdul Karim, had filed a general diary (GD) with the police station.
He said police began investigating the disappearance and brought Masum to the police station for questioning based on the call records of Roni’s mobile phone.
Masum had also gone to the police station when the GD was filed, the police official said.
During questioning, Masum admitted that Roni was owed Tk3 lakh by him and had been pressuring him to repay the money.
Masum then took Roni to his house on the pretext of paying the money, police said. He allegedly struck Roni on the head, knocking him down, before tying his hands and legs, wrapping his face in polythene and burying him under sand and soil in an empty space between two buildings beneath the house.
Following Masum’s instructions, police went to the location and recovered Roni’s partially decomposed body by digging through the sand and soil.
After completing legal procedures, police sent the body to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Friday morning for an autopsy.
Roni lived in Khilgaon, police said.
The police official said Roni’s wife, Nusrat Jahan Sima, filed a case with the police station as the complainant.
