Sagar-Runi murder: RAB seeks to assist task force after being removed from probe

The Rapid Action Battalion, following removal from the Sagar-Runi murder probe after failing to submit an investigation report for 12 years, has said it wants to help the task force ordered by the High Court to investigate the case.

Lieutenant Colonel Munim Ferdous, director of RAB's Legal and Media Wing, on Wednesday addressed the media regarding the investigation into the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, saying that the High Court has indicated the necessity for more experienced personnel to expedite the probe and recommended forming a task force that includes experts in the field.

"If RAB's assistance is needed, we are prepared to help," he said during a press conference at the RAB Media Center.

Munim emphasized the urgency of the matter, especially after RAB was removed from the investigation on September 30. The High Court has mandated the formation of a high-powered task force to complete the investigation within six months.

When asked if there was any pressure from the previous government regarding the investigation report, the RAB spokesperson said: “A task force has been formed with more experienced individuals for the sake of investigation.”

The official also addressed concerns about RAB's involvement during recent protests. “While members of various forces went on strike, no RAB member participated in the strike. RAB members did not flee,” he added.

He assured the press that RAB did not use firearms against protesters. “During the protests, RAB did not fire any shots at the students and public. If you have any complaints, we will investigate them,” he said.

In terms of crowd control, Munim said RAB used only tear gas shells and sound grenades from helicopters. He noted that various measures have been taken by RAB headquarters in response to these incidents.
