Police constable lands in jail over killing college student in Gazipur

A police constable has been arrested and sent to jail for allegedly shooting and killing a college student, by holding a gun to his abdomen near Konabari Police Station in Gazipur.

The constable, Md Akram Hossain, 22, was arrested on Friday from the Parail area of Kishoreganj.

Akram, constable of Gazipur Industrial Police, is accused of killing the student Hriday, who was from Alamgar village in Gopalpur, Tangail, and was a student in the 11th grade at Hemnagar Degree College.

Hriday was also working as an auto-rickshaw driver while living in the Konabari area along with his study.

According to police, on August 5, during an anti-government student protest on Konabari Road, Hriday was seen chanting slogans. When he noticed the presence of several police officers, he took a position by the side of the road. At that time, some industrial police officers were on duty in Konabari and they began to beat Hriday.

Constable Akram, acting aggressively, shot Hriday from behind, killing him on the spot.

Hriday's cousin, Md Ibrahim, filed a murder case with Konabari police station following the incident.

The complaint in the case alleges that 250-300 unidentified terrorists, allegedly under the orders of former Minister of Liberation War AKM Mozammel Haque, Gazipur City Awami League President Azmat Ullah, and former City Mayor Jahangir Alam, attacked the students.

During the attack, Hriday sought refuge in a nearby shop but was dragged out by unidentified police officers, who then surrounded him and shot him dead.

The complaint states that Hriday’s death was captured on video by the complainant and local witnesses. The case names 57 individuals and includes 250-300 unnamed suspects.

A video that has circulated on Facebook shows six police officers dragging the student to a side street, surrounding him, and one officer striking him.

Constable Akram is then seen shooting Hriday in the abdomen, causing him to fall to the ground and bleed extensively. The video also shows additional police officers arriving at the scene, where Hriday’s body remained for some time.

Assistant Commissioner Subir Kumar Saha of the Konabari Zone stated that Constable Akram was sent to jail via court order on Saturday afternoon.

Efforts are underway to arrest the other individuals involved in the incident, said the police official
