Bishwajit murder: Court records testimony of 6th witness

A Dhaka court recorded testimony of the sixth prosecution witness in the sensational murder case of Bishwajit Das, Sunday, who was killed in public by some Chhatra League members in Old Dhaka in December last year.

Speedy Trial Tribunal 4 Judge ABM Nizamul Haque recorded the deposition of Swapan Howlader, a sweeper working in the Victoria Park area and set August 12 for hearing the next witness.

The sixth witness to testify in the murder case said he did not know the accused or their names. On the morning of December 9 last year, he was working in the park area and saw a procession coming from Jagannath University. Suddenly, two hand bombs exploded towards the rear of the procession and some people started running.

He said one man tried to run away and cross the road. But some people attacked him and hacked at him with a cleaver and iron rods. The victim tried to save himself and ran inside the Intensive Dental Clinic. The killers followed him there too and continued attacking him. Then the victim ran towards Shakhari Bazar area.

Around 1:30pm, Swapan heard that the victim had died. The next day, he learnt more about the incident from the television and newspapers.

Bishwajit, a 24-year-old tailor, was hacked to death by the Chhatra League activists in the Bahadur Shah Park (Victoria Park). He was brutally beaten for half an hour in the presence of police by the ruling party men who reportedly mistook him for a pro-opposition activist.
