Nahid murder: Two of four Dhaka College attackers in custody

Law enforcers and students say two students of Dhaka College have been taken into custody in connection with the brutal attack on delivery person Nahid Hossain that left him dead on April 19.

The duo are among the four students, all Chhatra League activists, whose photos were published by the media on Sunday. Most of them were staying in the residential halls of the college.

They are Kaiyum, Emon, Shaheen Sadek Mirza and Kauser Hamid.

Meanwhile, many students started leaving the halls on Sunday after the detectives beefed up vigilance to nab the suspected attackers.

In the afternoon, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police and elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided a dormitory of the college and detained one student from Room No 101 of the International Hall.

Zahir Hasan Jewel was detained for questioning and two mobile sets were seized during the raid, according to witnesses. Jewel was a member of the now-defunct convening committee of Dhaka College unit Chhatra League and a student of the Department of Accounting of the college.

Emon, who was identified from a video hacking Nahid on the footpath, lived in that room. He has been hiding since the incident.

Dormitory Superintendent and lecturer of the Department of Islamic History and Culture Kamruzzaman said: “I heard that DB and RAB members came to the dormitory. Mobile phones have been seized. However, I do not know whether any student has been detained.”

Detectives say they have identified several other students who took part in the attack on that day with locally-made weapons and wearing helmets, reports Bangla Tribune.

Some traders and workers were in helmets as well.

A DB official asking not to be named told Bangla Tribune that four groups of Chhatra League activists had taken part in the protest against New Market traders on Tuesday morning which turned into a violent clash.

“Two of them have been detained for interrogation,” said the officer, without giving details.

Nahid, working as a delivery person at a computer accessories shop, was lynched and hacked in front of Nurjahan Super Market around 12:45pm after he became detached from the group of traders-workers, the official said.

He succumbed to injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital the same night.

The protest followed the reported assault of some students the previous night at two fast food shops near Gate No 4.

“It’s a very sensitive case and we’ve given utmost priority to the investigation. We don’t want to make a hasty decision,” DB Joint Commissioner Mahbub Alam told Bangla Tribune.

The detectives on Friday detained BNP leader Moqbul Hossain from his Dhanmondi residence and later showed him arrested in a case filed for sabotage, violence and obstructing police from performing duties.

He was later placed on three-day police remand. At least two dozen BNP leaders and activists have been named in the case.

The BNP has condemned the arrest and said that the government was trying to save its men by implicating the opposition leaders and activists in “false cases”.
