Wanted criminal killed in Meherpur 'gunfight'

A suspected criminal has been killed in an alleged gunfight with police in Meherpur’s Sadar upazila. Police said the deceased Firatul Islam, 44, was a listed criminal, who was wanted in 10 cases, including murder and robbery. Meherpur district police chief Ahsan Habib told the Dhaka Tribune that police raided a jackfruit orchard in Nurpur village after being tipped off about the criminals' presence. The gang opened fire on the law enforcers, leading to a skirmish. Firatul died in the "gunfight" on the spot, the SP said, adding that five policemen too had been injured. The injured policemen were given first-aid at Meherpur General Hospital. Police recovered an LG shuttergun, five rounds of bullet, five cocktails and three machetes from the spot.
