Fake doctors held for aborting, killing woman

A fake doctor couple have been arrested for throwing a patient – who had died from excessive bleeding during abortion - into a swamp at Uttar Khan of Dhaka.

The wrapped death body of young Mala Rani Das was recovered from the swamp on Monday, said Helal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Uttar Khan Police Station.

Police has also arrested the accused doctor couple - Hasina Aktar and Golam Rabbani - from Shariatpur and Pallabi of Dhaka on Monday.

Upon interrogating, they confessed to their crime, and police were able to recover the dead body, said the OC.

Both of them were arrested two years ago for killing another woman during abortion at their clinic named Chhayapath.

“We caught them and shut the clinic down. They were released on bail and again the same incident occurred, this time at their own house,” said OC Helal.

He said, Mala, a very impoverished woman was five months pregnant. On July 3, she told her husband Hari Gopal Das that she is going to visit a doctor and went out at about 3pm.

Calling from an unknown number she told her husband Hari that she would stay the night at her relative’s house and return home the next day. She didn’t even say which doctor she had gone to.

After not being able to trace her on July 4, Hari filed a general diary on July 5 over his missing wife, said the OC.

Tracking the unknown number, police identified the fake doctors.

“Confessing to the crime, Hasina Aktar said that Mala wanted to have an abortion, and she died from excessive bleeding,” said Helal.

She died on July 4 afternoon and the fake doctor couple discarded the dead body at around 10pm, by throwing it into a swamp of Moddhopara of Uttar Khan which is filled with water hyacinths.
