An alleged group of Bangladeshi militants have reportedly snuck into Kalamchhaura along the Sonamura border, claim anonymous sources.
A jeep-driver entering Kalamchhaura yesterday was stopped by a group of 7-8 men at Ananda Nagar.
Kalamchhaura lies across the border from Comilla.
According to the driver, who reported the incident at the local police station, the men had been clad in lungis and were wielding arms.
Locals claim that the police and BSF began their search operation two hours after the complaint had been lodged.
Police Control Superintendent Bhanu Chakraborty said: “The police and BSF jointly carried out a search operation after the complaint was lodged. We have yet to trace these men. They might have fled to Comilla once the search drive began and are probably hiding there.”
About 12km of the Indo-Bangla border at Sonamura lies unfenced, making it easy to cross over from those points. Kalamchhaura, especially, acts as a major smuggling point due to the lack of BSF presence and vigilance there.
